Problem Statement
India is home to over 150 million small and marginal farmers, each owning less than two hectares of land, yet together they produce nearly half of the country’s food. Despite their critical role, these farmers face persistent challenges. Every year, more than 30% of crops are lost due to unpredictable weather, pests, and diseases that damage nearly a quarter of the harvest. At the same time, 60% of farming relies on groundwater, but inefficient irrigation practices often waste this limited resource in a country already facing severe groundwater depletion. These combined issues cost billions annually, reducing productivity, threatening food security, and leaving small farmers—who already earn marginal incomes—more vulnerable. A key factor is the lack of real-time, localized, and actionable guidance to help farmers make better crop care decisions under changing conditions.
Proposed Solution – SmartKisan
SmartKisan is an AI-driven real-time farming assistant designed to bridge this gap. It integrates official datasets from IMD, Data.gov.in, and other open sources with machine learning models (TensorFlow, Scikit-learn) to provide personalized advice on irrigation, pest control, and harvesting. What makes SmartKisan distinct is its agentic AI engine, capable of dynamically adapting recommendations based on weather, soil conditions, and pest forecasts.
Accessibility is central: SmartKisan communicates via SMS (Twilio) and Telegram chatbot interfaces, making it usable even for farmers with limited technology exposure. The system prioritizes simplicity, trust, and real-world usability, while being scalable across India’s diverse agro-climatic regions and crop varieties.
By delivering timely, location-specific insights, SmartKisan enables farmers to minimize crop losses, conserve water, and improve yield and income sustainably. In the long run, with expert validation and farmer-focused pilots, SmartKisan aspires to become a trusted digital companion for millions of Indian farmers, helping agriculture evolve into a more resilient and sustainable system.
