Traffic isn't just an inconvenienceโit's a life-or-death crisis that affects millions daily. My personal wake-up call came when I literally fell asleep in traffic, trapped for hours in Lagos gridlock. But the real tragedy struck recently during the Independence Bridge crisis in Lagos.
The Lagos Independence Bridge Crisis (April 2025): When the Federal Government closed the Independence Bridge for emergency repairs, Lagos experienced catastrophic gridlock that lasted days. Commuters were trapped for over 48 hours, businesses shut down, and the economic impact was devastating. I witnessed firsthand how this "temporary" closure created a domino effect of chaos across the entire city.
The Human Cost: During one of these traffic nightmares, I watched helplessly as a patient in an ambulance died while gasping for breathโunable to reach the hospital because of an impenetrable wall of vehicles. Emergency services became useless when roads became parking lots. That moment changed everything for me.
The Global Scale: The world's longest traffic jam happened in China in 2010โa 62-mile (100km) gridlock that lasted 12 days. Drivers moved only 1km per day, with some trapped for nearly two weeks. A makeshift economy emerged selling overpriced food and water to stranded motorists. This wasn't just traffic; it was a humanitarian crisis.
