Inspiration
Our project was inspired by a shared frustration with everyday inefficiencies, and we honed in on a big one: traffic. We wanted to create a model that shows how drivers' choices, general traffic flow, and road conditions can mess up our time and waste gas through constant braking. Our goal is to understand these factors better to find solutions that save time and reduce the environmental impact of unnecessary fuel use. We're all about making things more straightforward and sustainable.
What it does
Our site allows users to edit a multitude of parameters and create a semi-real traffic simulation based on things like drivers' choices and the current flow of traffic.
How we built it
We used vanilla JavaScript, CSS, and HTML to build our project.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge we ran into was scope. Our project felt very difficult to complete in just a few hours, despite this we were able to decide what was absolutely necessary to get our project up and running.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of being able to get a project finished, especially since we have never made anything close to a real-world simulation before.
What we learned
We learned a lot about simulating real-world conditions using technology as well as sharpened our website-building skills!
What's next for Traffic Simulation Playground
There's so many things we could improve so here is a rapid-fire list:
- More accurate car AI and road conditions
- Statistics on traffic flow and fuel wasted due to breaking
- Optimizing driver parameters to find out what an ideal driver for efficiency would look like
- Adding more parameters for the simulation such as vehicle size and adding onramps
