We ended up working on: Theme 5, Challenge 5: How can we effectively reduce avoidable food waste and effectively utilise unavoidable food waste?
Inspiration
We are all passionate about solving food waste, having used apps such as Olio and Too Good To Go. We realised that we needed to solve the problem of food waste before it reaches consumers, starting with the farmers and growers.
The Problem
Surplus food amounts to 4% of all harvested food which represents 3.8M tonnes of CO2 emissions and a market value of £500M.
What it does
Our solution is a B2B digital platform that conveniently connects suppliers and buyers of surplus food, including farmers, growers, wholesalers and the catering and hospitality industry.
We create a virtual trading relationship between food Farmers and businesses to trade surplus food.
How we built it
We are planning to build a B2B marketplace, which will be an MVP with an off the shelf solution.
Challenges we ran into
We switched challenges a few times on the first day after doing initial research. After a lot of deliberating, we finally settled on our challenge. Also, some of us were hackathon virgins ( and some for the first time online).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Transforming strangers into colleagues who have created a great project. Delivering an end product.
What we learned
Millennials and Boomers can work together! Also, that we can collaborate over time zone differences and all of us are from very different backgrounds and ages. Diversity rules!
