Inspiration
Many of us have used Investopedia to practice trading stocks. However, that website is cluttered, making it needlessly difficult to use. Our project provides a solution to that problem by allowing users to paper trade with a minimalist design.
What it does
Our program allows users to simulate trades at any point during the last 30 days and follow the outcomes of those trades in real time.
How we built it
We gathered data from Yahoo Finance and stored it in our Tiger Data database. We then converted many of those tables into Tiger Data's efficient hyper tables using their website. Our Python script then transformed that data into a helpful format and fed it to the frontend using Flask. The front end then displayed that data using chart.js and provided intuitive user input.
Challenges we ran into
Handling the thousands of data points of stocks over the last 30 days was difficult, yet Tiger Data's hyper tables helped make it more efficient since all stock prices are associated with times.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The ease of use and clarity of our frontend is exceptional.
What we learned
We had to collaborate a lot so we improved our Git and communication skills.
What's next for Trading Simulator
We can allow users to trade further in the past, possibly as much as a year.
