Inspiration

I was inspired to build TradeBook AR by the challenges businesses face when managing customer debts, tracking payments, and following up on overdue invoices. Poor accounts receivable management can affect cash flow, delay important business decisions, and make it difficult to identify financial risks. I wanted to create a tool that helps businesses understand what they are owed, manage collections more efficiently, and maintain better control over their finances.

What it does

TradeBook AR is an accounts receivable management tool that helps businesses manage customer debts and monitor outstanding payments. It provides a dashboard for tracking receivables, overdue invoices, and top debtors. Users can manage customers and transactions, allocate payments to invoices, monitor credit limits, organize collection follow-ups, forecast expected collections, analyze receivables by aging periods, estimate bad-debt provisions, and reconcile ledger balances. It also supports data export, backups, and an audit trail to help users monitor financial activity.

How we built it

I built TradeBook AR using Claude by Anthropic which gave me HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. HTML structures the interface, CSS provides the styling and responsive layout, and JavaScript powers the application's interactive features and financial calculations. I implemented customer and transaction management, payment allocation, receivables aging, collection reminders, expected collection forecasts, ledger reconciliation, and audit trail verification. Browser local storage supports data persistence, while CSV exports and JSON backups help users manage their records. I deployed the project using GitHub and Vercel.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was bringing several interconnected accounting workflows into one application. Payment allocation, outstanding invoice balances, receivables aging, credit limits, bad-debt provisions, and ledger reconciliation all require consistent calculations. Another challenge was designing an interface that presents useful financial information without overwhelming users. I also had to consider data persistence, transaction accuracy, responsive design, and making the application's different features work together reliably.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of building TradeBook AR into an interactive financial management prototype that brings multiple accounts receivable workflows together in one place. I'm especially proud of the payment allocation system, receivables aging analysis, collection management tools, expected collection forecasts, and ledger reconciliation features. The project demonstrates how I can use core web technologies to build a practical solution to a real business problem while creating a foundation for future improvements.

What we learned

Building TradeBook AR taught me that financial software requires more than a good user interface. Accounting calculations, data consistency, validation, and clear transaction records are essential. I also learned how different financial workflows depend on one another and why usability matters when presenting complex information. The project strengthened my skills in JavaScript, interface development, application logic, debugging, and deploying a web application.

What's next for Tradebook AR

My next step is to evolve TradeBook AR into a more complete business financial management platform. I plan to explore secure user authentication, cloud-based storage, multi-user access, automated payment reminders, email integration, live foreign exchange rates, and integrations with accounting and payment platforms. I also want to strengthen data validation, security, reporting, and testing, while exploring AI-powered insights that can help businesses identify payment risks, prioritize collections, and make better-informed cash-flow decisions.
