Inspiration
Everyone thinks they can read a chart. We wanted a game that tests it honestly: no money, no trading, just your eye against real market history.
What it does
- Real or fake? A real historical price chart splits into two endings. One really happened; the other was generated to look believable. Pick the real one: right answers pay chips and build a streak.
- Draw it: draw where the price went next. You're scored on how close your line comes to history, and you have to beat the flat line.
- Tables: sit with friends or computer "regulars" (always labelled as computer players). Every seat plays the same charts; the best reads split the prize.
- Daily fork: the same 10 charts for everyone, once a day, with a leaderboard.
- Learn: two short lessons for people who have never seen a chart. Then Wick, a living-candle mascot, points once at each new thing as it unlocks.
- 1,260 real charts from 44 US stocks and cryptocurrencies, in six languages (English, Turkish, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese).
Chips are virtual play money: they can't be cashed out, sold or sent to other players. Everything is free to play, and a chest refills free chips every 6 hours.
How we built it
- Expo / React Native + TypeScript: one codebase for iPhone and the web demo, with EAS over-the-air updates.
- Firebase: Auth (guest, then Sign in with Apple or Google), Firestore for boards and live tables, Cloud Functions for purchases.
- RevenueCat powers the chip store: four consumable packs served from an Offering and bought with the RevenueCat SDK. A RevenueCat webhook calls a Cloud Function that credits chips into a private, idempotent ledger (each store transaction credits exactly once). A claim fallback asks RevenueCat's API for anything the webhook missed. Sandbox purchases are capped for TestFlight, a signed-in player's first purchase is doubled, and a guest's purchases move to their account when they sign in.
- A Python pipeline builds the chart bank. We tuned the fake endings against a classifier until it could barely tell them apart (from 98.5% to 64% accuracy).
Challenges we ran into
- Making fakes hard to spot without making them unfair: wicks and gaps were the giveaway.
- Consumables can't be restored, so every purchase is credited on the server and is recoverable ("Check for missing chips").
- Balancing the economy: free chips generous enough to play forever, while packs still mean something.
- Teaching people who have never seen a price chart.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A game where skill really shows: every seat plays the same charts, and nothing random decides your own result.
- Purchases that never lose chips: webhook, claim and ledger together.
- A warm casual design with a mascot, in six languages.
What we learned
- Teach by playing: our first tutorial was 16 questions; a timed walkthrough and research cut it to 8.
- Point once, then get out of the way: Wick shows each new feature a single time.
