Inspiration

As college students, we’ve all been involved in clubs, teams, and friend groups with shared community spending. Currently, in our experience, groups use solutions like a shared google sheet to keep track of expenses and pictures of receipts are sent by text. This isn’t ideal because clubs and teams usually need someone to approve spending, receipts aren’t connected to purchases, and editing google sheets on mobile, the most likely platform for students on the go, is difficult.

What it does

** if our video embed isn't working watch here ** VIDEO Trackr solves these problems by providing a single platform for groups to keep track of spending information. Users can be part of multiple groups and either have the role of an Admin or a Member. Members can submit purchases for Admins to approve. Every user in a group can see a detailed spending breakdown, including the total budget for some amount of time (i.e. a semester, month, quarter, etc.), the remaining amount, and the details of each purchase including a scanned picture of the receipt members can snap from their phones. Admins can invite group members through an invite link where members can log in to an existing account or create a new one. In the future we’d like to add the ability for groups to connect to their bank accounts so that when an Admin approves spending Members can be reimbursed.

How we built it

We spent most of our time identifying a real problem and designing the best solution we could. Although we couldn’t talk to any stakeholders in the time we had, we’re all familiar enough with the process that we feel we made valid assumptions. We also spent a lot of time working on optimizing the user experience. Once we developed our user stories, sketched our ideas, and decided on the functionality, we created an interactive Figma prototype.

Challenges we ran into

One of the primary obstacles we faced was identifying a project that was not only viable as a solution to certain issues but also feasible to complete within our tight timeline. We devoted a considerable amount of time to understanding the user experience and determining the most effective workflow. Furthermore, we had to strike a delicate balance between integrating components that enhance user-friendliness and avoiding an overly complicated interface.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we were able to produce a well-scoped interactive MVP of our idea. We’re also proud of the appearance of our interface which we iterated over and over again until it looked right and the user experience was what we imagined.

What we learned

Two of our members were new to tools like Figma. While we didn’t end up implementing any code, we attended all the workshops and feel confident we could develop this app using React Native. We also learned the importance of having a solid collective brainstorming process and how whiteboard sketches are a great way of quickly communicating shared ideas. While implementing our Figma model, we learned a lot about the delicate balence between including too little or too much information on a screen.

What's next for Trackr

We discussed many features that we didn’t have time to model in our MVP. We’re excited about the idea of adding connections to bank accounts and/ or including a feature that would allow users to make payments within the app. We’d also like to interview and co-design with clubs on our different campuses to confirm our assumptions and iterate on our design, features, and user flow.
