Inspiration

The US Stock Market is an ever-changing entity, filled with plenty of different metrics to track. This ends up making it one of the largest publicly available data sources in the country. We wanted to tap into this data that everyone knows so well and answer the question "How do open and close prices change over time?"

What it does

The dashboard looks at stock market trends regarding daily open and close prices. We used Tableau Pulse to generate Average Daily Open and Daily Close prices to see how the prices change over time. From there, we dig into the data further, by looking at the change from one day to the next in a line graph. Ultimately, the user should be able to see a comprehensive overview of stock market trends at the daily level, and drill into specific companies to see their market trends.

How we built it

We used a suite of flat .csv files that were loaded into Data Cloud. From there, we used Data Cloud data to build a Tableau Semantic Model that joined together two DMOs into one data set, which we then used for our Tableau Next dashboard.

Challenges we ran into

When it came to data, we hit some roadblocks. Ideally, we wanted to use an API connection and utilize MuleSoft to establish a live connection to our data source, but due to some time and workload limitations, we couldn’t get that set up. In a perfect world, we would have had that set up to add another level of complexity to the dashboard.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Data Cloud, Tableau Semantics, and Tableau Next are all unfamiliar or new tools for us, so the fact that we were able to use all of them and get everything to work within our time frame is a huge accomplishment.

What we learned

We had bigger dreams for this dashboard, with lots of dashboard actions and filter capabilities, but unfortunately, while Tableau Next may have good bones, it’s an incredibly basic tool. In fact, simple functionalities that exist in Tableau Desktop, i.e. changing header fonts and sizes, or changing colors of bars and lines, simply don’t exist in Tableau Next, making it incredibly frustrating to use. It is also slow to develop and very buggy. I think it has a long way to go to be considered a good, usable product.

What's next for Stock Market Overview

We hope to get this dashboard running with a live connection. We think this view gives a lot of good information regarding the stock market, and displays it in an easily accessible, digestible manner. Hopefully, this will help us and others with any questions we may have regarding the stock market.
