TrackChain: Decentralized Shipment Tracker About the Project TrackChain was inspired by the increasing need for transparency and security in the logistics industry. Traditional shipment tracking systems rely heavily on centralized platforms, making them vulnerable to tampering, data loss, and single points of failure. We wanted to leverage blockchain technology, specifically Tezos, to build a decentralized solution that provides a secure and transparent system for tracking shipments.

What Inspired Us Our inspiration came from observing the limitations of current shipment tracking solutions. We saw an opportunity to harness the power of blockchain technology to decentralize the tracking process and eliminate reliance on a single authority. The idea of making shipment data immutable and accessible to all stakeholders in real time motivated us to create a system that ensures trust across the entire supply chain. Tezos’ energy-efficient consensus mechanism and low transaction fees made it the ideal blockchain for our solution.

What We Learned During the development of TrackChain, we gained insights into several areas:

Smart Contract Development on Tezos: Learning to write and deploy smart contracts using SmartPy gave us hands-on experience with Tezos, particularly in terms of gas fee optimization and ensuring contract security. Decentralized vs. Centralized Systems: While decentralized systems provide greater security, they also come with challenges related to speed and user adoption. We learned how to balance these factors to create an efficient and user-friendly product. IoT Integration: We worked on integrating IoT devices with blockchain systems, which was an exciting challenge. Ensuring that real-time data from IoT devices is accurately recorded on-chain was a key learning experience. How We Built It We built TrackChain using a combination of SmartPy for smart contract development and Tezos as the blockchain platform. The project was developed as follows:

Smart Contracts: We wrote smart contracts in SmartPy to handle shipment tracking events, such as when a shipment is created, updated, or completed. These contracts ensure that shipment data remains immutable and tamper-proof. Frontend: We used React.js to build a clean and intuitive user interface where users can easily track shipments, view detailed information, and interact with the blockchain seamlessly. IoT Integration: We connected IoT devices to monitor real-time shipment data, such as temperature and location, using external APIs and integrated them with the blockchain to ensure secure, transparent tracking. Backend and APIs: The backend was developed using Express.js, and we utilized the Tezos Node RPC API to interact with the blockchain, fetching transaction details and shipment status. Challenges We Faced Learning SmartPy: Transitioning from other smart contract languages like Solidity to SmartPy was a learning curve. We had to familiarize ourselves with Tezos’ unique features, such as its proof-of-stake consensus and gas model. Optimizing Gas Fees: Gas fees can be a major bottleneck when recording frequent shipment events on-chain. We optimized our contracts and transaction logic to minimize fees while ensuring security. IoT and Blockchain Integration: Synchronizing real-time data from IoT devices with the blockchain was challenging, particularly in ensuring that the data flow was smooth and that there was minimal delay in recording events on-chain. User Adoption and Education: Educating users on how to interact with a decentralized platform like TrackChain, especially with wallets like Temple Wallet, required extra focus on user experience design and clear onboarding tutorials. TrackChain aims to revolutionize the logistics industry by providing an immutable, secure, and transparent tracking system powered by Tezos. We believe decentralized shipment tracking is the future, offering trust and accountability for all stakeholders in the supply chain.
