Inspiration
The idea for the Income Statement Calculator App was born from a common problem across many developing countries: small businesses, market vendors, freelancers, and startup founders often lack access to affordable and user-friendly financial tools. Traditional accounting software is either too complex or too expensive, and many people don't have the training to use it effectively.
We were inspired to create a tool that could bridge the gap between everyday entrepreneurs and financial clarity — something that could be used by anyone with basic income and expense records, even on a mobile device with limited internet.
How We Built It
We built the app using modern web technologies to ensure accessibility, speed, and ease of use:
Frontend: HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to create a clean, responsive interface.
Deployment: Hosted on Netlify for fast and free access from any device.
The app guides users through entering revenue, costs, and expenses to automatically calculate gross and net income — generating a simplified income statement in real time.
The design focuses on clarity and simplicity, keeping everything lightweight so it loads well even in areas with slow internet.
What We Learned
This project taught us the power of designing for inclusion. By building with users from low-resource environments in mind, we learned:
The value of intuitive UX for non-experts.
How to balance simplicity with functionality.
The importance of optimizing for speed, mobile access, and low data usage.
We also learned a lot about how small businesses operate financially in informal sectors — often with handwritten records and limited digital literacy.
Challenges We Faced
Connectivity limitations: We had to ensure the app worked smoothly on low-bandwidth networks.
User interface design: It was challenging to make financial concepts accessible without oversimplifying.
Local adaptability: Designing a tool that works across different currencies and tax formats required thoughtful structuring.
Despite these challenges, we succeeded in delivering a tool that’s both functional and empowering.
Impact and Vision
We believe this app can make a real difference by helping everyday people take control of their finances. Our vision is to expand the tool with multi-language support, currency options, and data export features — so it can serve more communities across Africa and beyond.
