Inspiration:

Going into this project, we knew that climate change was a massive feat that we weren’t going to solve overnight, let alone as a small team with no academic background pertaining to climate change.. However, we knew that there were many factors contributing to climate change and some of the factors, if addressed by a collective with small conscious practices, could make a big impact to the human population. Over the next few weeks of agreeing and disagreeing, we finally decided on the subject of plastic because it is not only relatable to everyone and used by most, but it is a big contributor to climate change.

What it does:

Our widget allows users to track the amount of plastic they consume on a daily basis, be incentivized for recycling properly, become more aware and conscious about plastic consumption, and learn how to recycle specific plastics.

How we built it:

We created low fidelity prototypes using Figma before moving on to high fidelity and then developed it using Monday, Javascript, CSS, Typescript, and HTML.

Challenges we ran into:

One of our biggest challenges was adaptability to different-sized screens once the widget was developed. Another challenge that we would like to develop after judge's feedback, is incorporating a database for people to search what plastics are recyclable and how to recycle them, versus a popup link that leads to an outside source.

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

We designed an intuitive and fun widget that is able to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in order to spread awareness about plastic consumption.

What we learned:

Users are more likely to recycle if incentivized and engaged.

What's next for Track My Plastic:

We would like to do more usability testing to see what other features might be helpful to users to encourage them to continue recycling and using the widget.
