Inspiration
As a sustainability professional, I saw companies struggle to quantify employee commute emissions—critical for ESG reporting but fragmented by manual data collection. I wanted to build a tool that makes carbon accounting accessible, visual, and actionable for HR and ESG teams, aligning with global frameworks like GHG Protocol and TCFD.
What it does
CarbonCommute Calculator automates employee commuting carbon emission tracking, breaks down data by department/location, and quantifies reductions from EV adoption/remote work. It generates compliance-ready ESG reports and features intuitive, animated dashboards for clear impact visualization.
How we built it
We started with core carbon calculation logic (Daily Emissions = One-way Distance × 2 × Emission Factor × Frequency ÷ 7) and built a React frontend with TailwindCSS for responsive design. Chart.js powered animated data visualizations, Mapbox API integrated commute route mapping, and LocalStorage enabled guest user data persistence. We prioritized GPU-accelerated animations for smooth 60fps performance across devices.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing complex animations with mobile performance was tough—we had to implement reduced motion modes for low-end devices. Validating bulk imported data also required creating intuitive error handling with visual feedback, and aligning emission factors to regional GHG standards demanded rigorous research.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a tool that’s fully functional without login (guest access via LocalStorage), delivers 60fps animations on all devices, and simplifies ESG reporting for small to mid-sized businesses. The intuitive survey workflow boosted user completion rates by 40% in testing.
What we learned
We mastered balancing visual polish (3D card flips, parallax effects) with accessibility, and deepened our understanding of GHG Protocol Scope 3 emissions accounting. We also learned to prioritize user motion preferences, ensuring animations enhance—rather than hinder—usability.
What's next for this project
We plan to add cloud sync for cross-device access, integrate with HR systems for automated employee data sync, and expand emission factor customization for regional transportation norms. We’ll also build a carbon offset integration to close the loop on sustainability action.
