Hackathon Project: TraceStack
Inspiration
As a marketer, one of the most frustrating challenges I’ve faced is not knowing what actually led to a conversion. Was it the blog post, the LinkedIn DM, the email drip, or the sales call? The data never told the full story — UTMs break, cookies get blocked, and “dark social” hides a lot of real influence.
I wanted to build a tool that answers a simple but powerful question:
“What really influenced this lead?”
That’s how TraceStack was born — a plug-and-play attribution intelligence layer that helps marketers track every single touchpoint in the buyer journey, even the invisible ones.
How I Built It
TraceStack combines front-end tracking, backend event logging, and integrations with popular tools to create a complete attribution timeline for every user.
Tech Stack
- Database: Supabase
- Netlify: Reliable hosting
- Bolt: Fullstack Development
What It Does
- Tracks multi-touch attribution across web, email, ads, and social
- Builds a user-level attribution timeline showing influence over time
- Flags “dark social” leads using keywords in form submissions (e.g., “found you on LinkedIn”)
- Sends attribution alerts to Slack when high-value leads engage
What We Learned
- Attribution is a blend of technical tracking and human context. Some things just can’t be captured with JavaScript alone, so we added manual tagging and qualitative inputs.
- Users don’t care about charts. They care about answers. We simplified reporting to clearly show "what influenced this deal" in plain English.
- Speed and privacy matter. We had to balance data collection with respecting user consent and compliance.
Challenges We Faced
- Tracking across platforms was tough. UTMs don’t persist well, and users switch devices
- Dark social is a black box. People mention your brand in DMs, WhatsApp, or podcasts — and there’s no “click” to track. We tackled this by creating a system to manually log and tag these signals.
- Time pressure: Integrating multiple APIs and building a clean UI under 48 hours was a race against the clock but we kept the MVP focused and functional.
What’s Next
TraceStack is still in its early days, but we’re excited to:
- Add AI-powered attribution scoring
- Expand integrations (Slack, Salesforce, Twitter)
- Launch a no-code dashboard for non-technical marketers
Marketing should be led by clarity, not guesswork. TraceStack helps marketers finally see the real story behind every conversion. No more shouting matches about first-touch vs last-touch — just honest, helpful attribution.
