About the Project
Inspiration
Medication reminder apps already exist, but many only focus on reminding users to take their pills. Inspired by one of our team members’ experiences as a pharmaceutical sciences major, he shared his concern about missing deadlines after taking medications that cause drowsiness as a side effect. Through research and user feedback, we discovered that many people struggle to understand how their medication actually affects their body, especially when it comes to side effects and how long they last. This inspired us to create Trace, a medication-tracking app that goes beyond reminders to help users better understand their medication experience.
What We Learned
Throughout this project, we learned how important it is to design health tools that are both informative and simple to use. We explored user research methods, such as surveys and competitive analysis, to identify gaps in existing medication apps. We also learned how visualizing health data, such as side-effect timelines, can help users better understand patterns in their medication routines.
How We Built the Project
We followed a user-centred UI/UX design process that included research, defining the problem, ideation, prototyping, and testing.
We started with surveys and competitive analysis to understand current medication tracking behaviors. From there, we defined the key problem: users want more insight into medication effects, not just reminders.
We then designed the product structure, information architecture, and key features such as:
- Medication reminders
- Side-effect tracking
- Medication history visualization
- Caregiver monitoring
The interface and prototype were built in Figma, focusing on a calm, accessible design that prioritizes clarity and ease of use.
Challenges We Faced
One challenge was balancing health information with simplicity. Medication data can easily overwhelm users, so we had to carefully design how information like side effects and duration would be displayed without making the interface too complex.
Another challenge was ensuring the side-effect tracking flow felt intuitive. During testing, some users initially found symptom logging unclear, which led us to simplify the input process and improve the timeline visualization.
Final Outcome
The final concept for Trace is a medication companion that helps users track their pills, understand side effects, and visualize how medication affects their body over time. By combining reminders with effect tracking and caregiver monitoring, Trace aims to help users manage medication more safely and consistently.
