Inspiration
We all come to a point in our lives where driving is a necessity or a means to flaunt to our peers. Nonetheless, we all sit behind the wheel and have been spooked, overthought things, and have been anxious sitting next to a parent or guardian teaching you how to drive. Therefore, because of these natural emotions of letting someone with very little to no experience operate a vehicle, whether it be your parents, friends, or strangers, the possibility of them instructing improperly may stress out the learner driver. Furthermore, according to the CDC, the leading cause of death for teenagers is from motor vehicle accidents, which represents one third of all deaths. Additionally, the leading cause of death for young adults aged 18-24 is also motor vehicle accidents. These younger drivers made up 8.5% of fatal accidents in the United States which is unacceptable and must be improved. Therefore, it is necessary for both of these age groups to prevent these accidents and one effective way to prevent it is by proper driver education when they are first allowed to start driving. So, we want young drivers to learn in a very stress-free environment, and, in turn, learn to drive more efficiently.
What it does
Our project is a design for an addition to the Toyota app to improve its safety features and promote defensive driving. The app focuses on creating social good and building an enhanced experience. The new features that we add to the app can allow a parent or guardian to gain access to several car controls to foster learning and defensive driving standards.
How we built it
We built our project by first designing all of the new features that we wanted to add to the Toyota app. Then, we narrowed down our problem statement and solution so the features address them efficiently. We created notes and conducted research on statistics to prove that the benefits from our additions to the Toyota app outweigh the costs and are worthy of investment. We used the current Toyota app as a basis for how our app's user interface would look like and we implemented all of our new features from there.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the challenges we faced were detailing enough arguments to convince Toyota to invest in the new additions to their app but by conducting enough research we found statistics to show why our additions could be very beneficial for their drivers. Another challenge was finding a justification for why parents or guardians should have this degree of control over the car compared to giving full control to their child. Lastly, we debated about whether to allow these new additions to activate inside or outside the car but we decided we would enable the features only when the parent's phone is inside the car.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Accomplishments that we are proud of is finding necessary solutions to present problems and resolving issues about investment and costs.
What we learned
We learned to collaborate under a high stress environment and work together to overcome challenges with solutions by weighing various perspectives. Additionally, we learned that is good to consult with experts on this subject to gain more input.
What's next for Toyota Safety Mode
Drivers report that tells you how main times the passenger had to step in to help.
