Inspiration
Danny: honestly, when coming up with the idea, the climbing idea off of the one mechanic in the later chapters (4 & 5). To me, those sections are pretty fun and challenging, and while we couldn’t match its feel, I believe that knocking a bunch of peasant goblins off a tower is quite fun.
What it does
Tower of Tyranny is a game where you climb up a tower while avoiding the angry mob of peasants that are trying to kill you. You can parry attacks and ‘kick’ goblins too.
How we built it
With blood , sweat and alot of energy drinks. We also used Godot, Aseprite, Clip Studio Paint, and Cubase too.
Challenges we ran into
Danny: We struggled a lot figuring out our projects starting point after the prompt was revealed. It felt like we had a lot good ideas that just ended up not being viable within the time frame.
After we came up with our idea, we had to try to make sure scope creep didn’t occur because we wanted to make sure everyone on the team was comfortable with the workload. Ultimately we decided on a simple movement and ‘combat’ system, as it made the player character easier to program and animate.
Trying to figure out interesting enemies with good variety also was a pretty big hurdle. As a team of 1 programmer, 1 artist, 1 composer, and 1 ui dev, making sure we didn't over extend ourself in order to avoid burnout.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Khaleil: Finishing the grid movement was extremely rewarding, it is the basis of the whole game and gives the game it's feel.
What we learned
Danny: 24 game jams are NOT for the weak. Even though our team was balanced, it was still a lot of work to cram, and honestly requires you to not sleep or sleep very little. We worked pretty late last night, with some sleeping at 3 am and others later. Games are so much work and require a lot of time and energy (drinks) to make.
What's next for Tower of Tyranny
Khaleil: Probably not much. The characters used in the game will be reused in the future, however the content itself is unlikely to see much changes post competition
