Inspiration
Being our first Hackathon, we wanted to come up with a creative solution to a common problem. With our team being comprised of different nationalities, we were lead towards the idea of some sort of service to overcome language barriers.
Thus our idea TourX was born.
What it does
TourX is a mobile App that lets tourists break away from common tourist traps and locations to explore the local culture on their own.
Through scanning a dynamic QR code at their airport or hotel. The user will be given information about the local area and what services are offered in their chosen language. for example, the user can filter by what restaurants provide a multilingual menu, or if a barber shop speaks in their language.
This allows users to discover the local culture while also being able to find places where they can connect through the language they speak
How we built it
We first started by developing a mock up using Figma. as the mock up was created python scripts were made to for-fill the various needed functions of the app such as filtering locations by language, city, and providing the user the ability to scan a QR code through their devices camera
Challenges we ran into
Being our first Hackathon, we didn't know what to really expect, nor did we have a lot of experience. we originally wanted to use open-screen to generate dynamic QR codes and create a dynamic website. however we currently lack the skills to make this project fully realised. We were able to create the individual pieces, but struggled to bring it all together
Accomplishments that we're proud of
While our project can be described as a mock up and some loose code, were proud of the fact that we were able to discover a problem, come up with a solution, and lay the ground work that can be built upon in the future to eventually create a fully working application
What we learned
The biggest thing we learned during the creation of TourX is how important it is to have team members with different specialities. While we had members for back-end development and Design. non of us knew how to use JavaScript for open-screen, or create fully fledged html pages to interact with our back-end code. A diverse team would have allowed us to bring the different pieces of our project much more cohesively
What's next for TourX - Tourist Navigation App
None of our team members are code monkeys so to speak and coding isn't our main interests, so it is hard to say. Ideally we would like to finish our app with working web pages and full open-screen QR code support
