Overview

Today, we are truly making history. An experience of this magnitude has affected the entire world, making everyone feel a little closer. During this time, personal distance and safety has become more valued. This is prevalent in the tourism industry. The tourism industry is seeing cancellations coming in large numbers and revenue falling. Our solution is to take an additional step to ensure guest safety that will add to the overall customer experience. RoomForMe will allow guests to maintain social distance in hotel common areas anywhere, at any time from an app on their phone. RoomForMe works by scanning QR codes when walking into common areas. Any guest can see how many others have scanned into the room, and decide if they are comfortable going into the common areas based on those numbers. This app can also be applied to other settings, such as, convention centers, stadiums, and other public venues.

Team Members

How did you decide on this customer segment, problem, and solution?

We decided on this problem based on project interests we chose when beginning this challenge. The TechPoint team put us into groups based on those interests. To make the solution, we decided to focus on making guests feel comfortable while staying at hotels. One main issue we are experiencing today is social distancing. In many places, social distancing cannot be enforced if the store is at full capacity. Therefore, we are seeing stores turn to half or 75% capacity. With this app, guests will be able to see how many people are in the common areas of the hotel, making social distancing easier and more convenient.

How did your team build and iterate on the solution?

The team all did user testing and gave feedback to help further develop the MVP. As for project management, our project leader organized weekly meetings where the team discussed progress for the project and what each team member was going to accomplish during that week. The project leader also made a project plan for all team members and coaches to refer to throughout the project. In addition, we closely followed the TechPoint work plan to help guide us through the process. With help from the coaches, we were able to complete the project with a well established MVP along with the submission required materials. We are excited to share with you our project, as we have worked hard to make this project successful while excitedly thinking about future plans for the app.

Key Metrics

A few interviews were conducted to determine the viability of the product. From there, a survey was conducted to determine the product viability from a hotel guest perspective. The app had great reviews for ease of use and user experience.

If you had another 5 weeks to work on this, what would you do next?

If we had another 5 weeks to work on our website, we would update our system of tracking form QR code scanning to object detection through a hotel’s video cameras. This would allow for more accurate tracking and accommodate for users who decide not to use the QR code system. We would also implement a reservation system so that hotel guests would be able to reserve spots in a common area. We could also implement data analytics to track how much time and how often guests visit hotel facilities to help optimize operations. We would also implement object recognization for accurate tracking. We would implement database functionality, and use the hotels loyalty program for user tracking and rewarding. In addition, we would create another survey to get a larger sample size for the research aspect of the project. We would demonstrate that this app can be scaled to other public areas and not just hotels.
