Inspiration

We play a lot of escape room games, and my friends and I have even created a few games for our city. We realized how fun it is to explore and solve puzzles while discovering hidden gems around the city, so we thought: why not create an adventure for everyone else to enjoy? Thus, City Hunts was born—a platform that turns your city into an exciting treasure hunt filled with challenges.

What it does

City Hunts offers an interactive adventure where players can explore cities around the world through custom-built treasure hunts. Users can participate in challenges, solve riddles, uncover hidden locations, and share their own creations, allowing others to enjoy their unique adventures. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, City Hunts transforms any urban environment into an exciting playground.

How we built it

We built City Hunts with a combination of web technologies and geolocation features. The platform allows users to create, share, and track treasure hunts. We used a dynamic map interface to highlight clues, locations, and hidden spots. The back end was designed to handle user submissions, geospatial data, and the storage of puzzles and clues, while the front end is intuitive and engaging, providing a seamless experience for users to navigate.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was integrating the mapping system to accurately pinpoint clues and locations without overwhelming users with too much data. We also had to ensure that the platform was scalable, as user-generated hunts could vary widely in size and complexity. Another challenge was ensuring the security of the platform, making sure users’ data and submissions were protected while still allowing for an open community-driven space.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re particularly proud of how we managed to create a fully interactive treasure hunt experience that blends physical exploration with digital engagement. Our platform allows anyone to create and participate in hunts, and we've received amazing feedback from users. We've also developed a community that is eager to create new hunts and share their experiences.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned a lot about balancing user experience with performance. Managing large amounts of user-generated content, such as clues and locations, taught us how important it is to keep things optimized. We also learned the value of community-driven projects—people are always more engaged when they can contribute and customize their experiences.

What's next for City Hunts

We plan to expand City Hunts by incorporating more cities worldwide and improving our puzzle-building tools. We’re exploring ways to gamify the experience even more with rewards and achievements for users who complete hunts or create particularly challenging ones. Our long-term goal is to introduce augmented reality features that would allow for even more immersive treasure hunts.
