Inspiration

During my time volunteering at a local food pantry last summer, I encountered many individuals and families facing food insecurity, often relying on SNAP assistance to get by. Inspired by these experiences, my team and I created Foodlink, a platform to tackle food insecurity and waste. Our mission is simple: ensure everyone, especially those in financial need, has access to affordable, nutritious food. Through technology and community engagement, we're building a more equitable and sustainable food system where no one goes hungry.

What it does

FoodLink is a website that helps you find local food banks, get discounted bags of food from restaurants, and even gives you recipe ideas based on what you already have in your kitchen. It's all about helping you save money, reduce waste, and help others in your community.

How we built it

We created the app using Next.js.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges that we ran to are:

  • Finding reliable and accurate data and API resources
  • Figuring about API keys
  • Selecting themes, colors, and UI/UX elements that align with FoodLink's mission

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Developing a Chatbot: We successfully implemented a chatbot feature to provide personalized support and assistance to our users. This innovative solution allows users to receive real-time guidance and nutritional advice, enhancing their overall experience with FoodLink. Effective Teamwork: Despite our diverse backgrounds, our team shares a common mission for the project. We are all passionate about addressing food insecurity and food waste issues in our community, and we are committed to leveraging technology and innovation to make a meaningful difference.

What's next for FoodLink

Enhance Technology: Continuously improve our platform with new features and advancements to serve our users better. This includes optimizing user experience, adding more advanced search functionalities, and incorporating machine learning algorithms to personalize recommendations and assistance Expand Nationwide: Extend Foodlink's reach beyond NYC to other states across the US. Mobile App Development: Develop a mobile app version of Foodlink to provide users with greater convenience and accessibility on the go. Community Engagement: Engage with the community through outreach events, workshops, and educational initiatives to raise awareness and promote food security.
