Inspiration

Sensory substitution is the idea that one can build new senses to either replace those that are impaired or develop new senses. The most common form of this is tactile replacement.

What it does

In this project, we developed a tactile response to images, sending the top five colors and descriptors of an image to a vibrating pad. It's built in Java using the Clarifai API and data, which sends the results of the query to an arduino that controls how the motors go off in specific (in this case, braille) patterns to let the wearer know what is going on around them.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're extremely proud to have a prototype built and examples to show it off with, especially in the 24 hour time frame. We used aspects from design, engineering, and software development, in addition to conscious thinking about existing research to build upon what's already been done by combining these technologies.

What's next for Touch for Color

Improving the physical wearable certainly, in addition to creating a good abstract app for on-the-go use.
