Inspiration
Media literacy is a process of learning for Gen Z, which can be really hard to create a habit of, especially when social media is one of the main sources for political information. As Gen Z ourselves, we think it would be a helpful first step if there's a way to conveniently and seamlessly help us stay well-informed in this digital age.
What it does
This app creates an overlay on top of any social media app of choosing, and when the user encounters any political content that seems suspicious, the user can open the overlay to access a quick fact-checking system and an overall landscape on the topic. Questions are also prompted below to suggest further research and understanding into the topic.
How we built it
We focused only on learning, awareness, and convenience. The primary function is kept straightforward to ensure the experience is seamless and smooth. Everything is meant to be minimalism for legibility.
Challenges we ran into
Ideation and identifying the problem scope was a big challenge. Finding something unique and only targeting it was a process we took way too long to figure out.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud about the straightforwardness of the app. Its convenience is the first and foremost advantage that it carries.
What we learned
Media literacy is a process that cannot be fixed in just one go. The app also cannot be a all-in-one solution, but could rather a step-by-step solution.
What's next for TOUCAN
After ensuring success for the first primary action, we'd love to aim for the next step in media literacy and tackling better understanding on sourcing.
