Inspiration

As a new parent, you’re faced with both incredible joy and the inevitable challenges of caring for an infant. I wanted to create a tool that would not only lighten the load of daily care routines but also make it easier for parents to treasure and track their child’s growth and health. Tottler: Parents Helper was born out of the need for an intuitive, all-encompassing baby tracker. It empowers parents to monitor and record everything from feedings and diaper changes to growth milestones, all from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. My goal was to create an indispensable companion for every new parent—a tool that supports, organizes, and preserves precious moments.

What it does

Tottler simplifies and centralizes the essential activities of caring for an infant, offering an all-in-one solution for tracking feeding (breastfeeding, bottle, and solids), diaper changes, sleep patterns, and more. With an easy-to-use interface, parents can also monitor growth statistics such as weight, height, and head circumference, celebrate milestones, and keep track of doctor’s appointments and other health data. The app also includes a mood and temperature tracker, allowing parents to document their child’s wellness and development. Plus, with iCloud integration, Tottler syncs data seamlessly across Apple devices, ensuring that your information is accessible whenever and wherever you need it.

How I built it

The app was built using Swift and SwiftUI, with a focus on seamless functionality across Apple devices. Integrating iCloud for data synchronization was essential to provide the convenience of accessing real-time updates on any connected Apple device. Notifications were integrated to keep parents effortlessly updated on key events, such as feeding times, sleep schedules, and diaper changes. This comprehensive development approach allowed Tottler to work as a cohesive system that’s responsive, reliable, and secure.

Challenges I ran into

One of the primary challenges was implementing push notifications that worked both locally on the device and could update through iCloud when any changes occurred. Balancing the responsiveness of local notifications with the synchronization of iCloud presented technical difficulties. Additionally, the challenge was in ensuring that the notifications updated promptly if parents changed any scheduled times. Developing a secure, dependable framework for these notifications required careful planning and optimization.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I’m particularly proud of Tottler’s intuitive, user-friendly interface that caters to busy, often sleep-deprived parents. Ensuring that the design was easy to navigate yet comprehensive in functionality was a major accomplishment. Another achievement is the successful iCloud integration, which means that parents can seamlessly access their information across their Apple devices. Seeing Tottler evolve into a well-rounded, reliable app that can truly ease the journey of parenthood has been incredibly fulfilling.

What I learned

Throughout the development of Tottler, I learned about the importance of prioritizing user experience and how small design details can have a big impact on usability, especially for new parents. Additionally, integrating secure data management practices and effective notifications reinforced my understanding of cloud-based data synchronization and privacy standards. Each step of the way was a valuable learning experience in delivering a seamless, multi-functional product.

What's next for tottler: Baby Tracker & Parents Helper

Moving forward, I plan to expand Tottler’s features with additional customization options for reminders and notifications, including further health and wellness tracking options like vaccination schedules. I’m also exploring options for integrating Tottler with Apple HealthKit, which would allow for even more comprehensive tracking and insights. Future updates may also include shared accounts for easy collaboration between caregivers, as well as a web-based version to accommodate non-Apple devices.
