Inspiration
Hacklahoma Project: Building Tototoro
Inspiration
As a team, we observed that people spend hours on their phones daily, often without truly considering the impact on their productivity and overall well-being. We were inspired by the challenge of designing an app that not only tracks screen time but also provides clear insights to help users make conscious decisions about their digital habits. The goal was to create a tool that encourages less technology use and more meaningful engagement in daily life.
What We Learned
Transforming Data into Insight: We discovered the importance of converting raw data into actionable information that users can easily understand and act upon.
User Behavior Patterns: Through research and testing, we gained valuable insights into how different digital habits correlate with productivity and mental health outcomes
Simplicity in Design: We learned that simplicity is crucial; a straightforward, intuitive design can significantly enhance user experience and adoption.
Team Collaboration: Working together, we realized the power of diverse perspectives—from design and development to research and testing—in building a cohesive product.
How We Built the Project
Research & Ideation:
We began by studying current digital wellness trends and evaluating tools. Our team brainstormed to identify the gaps where Tuturo could offer real value.Algorithm Development:
Together, we designed an algorithm that analyzes screen time data and usage patterns to determine whether the user's behavior is productive or unproductive.App Development:
Leveraging modern development frameworks, our team built the webapp with a focus on a clean, user-friendly interface. Each team member contributed their expertise—front-end, back-end, and data analytics—to bring Tototoro to life.
Challenges Faced
User Engagement:
One of our major challenges was designing an interface that not only informs but also motivates users to change their habits. We had to find the right balance between presenting data and encouraging actionable insights with the user interfaceTeam Coordination:
As with any collaborative project, ensuring smooth communication and alignment among team members with different specialties was crucial. We overcame these challenges by setting clear goals and maintaining an open line of communication throughout the development process.
Final Reflection
The Hacklahoma project challenged us to rethink our relationship with technology and to develop a tool that empowers users to take control of their digital habits. Through collaboration, innovation, and perseverance, we built Tototoro—a tool designed to help users reduce unnecessary screen time and foster a more productive, balanced lifestyle.
