Inspiration

  • We are deeply connected to our community
  • Connect Organizations to Volunteers
  • Build a platform for those willing to help but unsure how

What it does

  • Aggregates service events that need volunteers, allowing people to easily find ways to help their community.

How we built it

  • We started by defining our problem, the features a solution would require, then working backwards from there.
  • We chose software solutions in which we had experience, but not complete knowledge, allowing us to move quickly and learn things.

Challenges we ran into

  • Limited React knowledge
  • Local Development/Cookie issues
  • Same-Site Request issues
  • Limited Gitlab CI/CD minutes

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Functionality completed under limited time constraint
  • Satisfying user interface

What we learned

  • Prioritize functionality before focusing on features.
  • Thorough design -> easier implementation
  • The basics of react

What's next for Voluntime?

We have quite a few features which the backend already has support for. Including:

  • Filtering feed posts based on duration, location, need
  • Allowing event organizers to record attendance of volunteers who responded on Voluntime - establishing a reputation for regular volunteers.
  • The option for Volunteers to include a message to the event coordinator when they volunteer for an event.

In the future, we would like to add full stack functionality:

  • Create a map of events near 'me'
  • Allow users to update posts
  • Allow users to comment on posts
  • Prevent spam via email verification
  • Create a verification page for organizations to verify with their official information
