Inspiration
- We are deeply connected to our community
- Connect Organizations to Volunteers
- Build a platform for those willing to help but unsure how
What it does
- Aggregates service events that need volunteers, allowing people to easily find ways to help their community.
How we built it
- We started by defining our problem, the features a solution would require, then working backwards from there.
- We chose software solutions in which we had experience, but not complete knowledge, allowing us to move quickly and learn things.
Challenges we ran into
- Limited React knowledge
- Local Development/Cookie issues
- Same-Site Request issues
- Limited Gitlab CI/CD minutes
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Functionality completed under limited time constraint
- Satisfying user interface
What we learned
- Prioritize functionality before focusing on features.
- Thorough design -> easier implementation
- The basics of react
What's next for Voluntime?
We have quite a few features which the backend already has support for. Including:
- Filtering feed posts based on duration, location, need
- Allowing event organizers to record attendance of volunteers who responded on Voluntime - establishing a reputation for regular volunteers.
- The option for Volunteers to include a message to the event coordinator when they volunteer for an event.
In the future, we would like to add full stack functionality:
- Create a map of events near 'me'
- Allow users to update posts
- Allow users to comment on posts
- Prevent spam via email verification
- Create a verification page for organizations to verify with their official information
