Inspiration
Despite its goal of being an authentic social media platform, BeReal falls short in its design. People can simply ignore the notification and take the photo whenever they like, allowing for curation. We were appalled by this, and so we set out to create a truly authentic social media service, one that is so authentic it would deter those who are not committed to showing off their true selves.
What it does
TooReal takes a screenshot of your computer screen at some random point every hour and posts it on the website, along with your username and timestamp.
How we built it
We created the frontend using PHP and managed the user information with a SQL database, all of which was running on an AWS server. The screenshots are taken by a Python script, and sent to the server.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled with getting the AWS server to accept the files that were being sent, and this took a lot of troubleshooting to solve. Additionally, we had to manually rewrite some of the Python libraries that were preventing screenshots from being taken.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest accomplishment for us was building a functioning prototype within the short time we had. We ran into many issues, yet we always found a way to circumvent them and read our end goal.
What we learned
One of the biggest takeaways we had is that something doesn't have to be useful for it to be interesting to make. We had a great deal of fun making this website for the sake of making it, and we think it is important to remind ourselves why were are passionate about what we do.
What's next for TooReal
We plan on showing it to our friends and perhaps try to persuade them to try out the platform.
