Inspiration
During a recent trip to the dining hall, we made fun of Amanda for drinking a glass of milk. She explained that this was necessary for her due to her family's medical history. I looked down at my full bowl of spinach to account for my iron deficiency and realized that eating healthy can look dramatically different for different people. We talked about how difficult it is to eat healthy (whatever that means for you) as a broke and busy college student.
What it does
By uploading pictures of your fridge, this product will come up with recipes that address your health needs, fit your time constraints, and account for your budget. It also makes suggestions for future ingredients to best achieve your goals.
How we built it
We used Gemini's API to recognize the ingredients in the photos. Our React frontend also allows for the user to manually edit this list. We store these ingredients in a NoSQL database. When a user requests recipes, our backend queries the database and uses Spoonacular's API to create a list of recipes the user can make as well as recipes the user could make with just a few more ingredients.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into various issues with dependancies as well as indecipherable merge conflicts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create a minimal viable product despite the difficulties we faces. We continued to persevere and make progress on our project when we were struggling.
What we learned
We learned how to put a large scale project together in a limited amount of time. This involved a lot of cooperation and learning how to resolve our dependency issues.
What's next for Tony's Dream
We could refine Tony's Dream by reworking the backend for better scalability, allowing video submissions, and polishing the overall UI.
