ToneCheck — Analyze Before You Send

Inspiration

We've all been there.

You type a message in frustration, hit send, and immediately wish you could take it back. Maybe it cost you a friendship. Maybe your boss took it the wrong way. Maybe your partner went silent for hours.

The problem isn't what we mean to say — it's how it actually lands.

I built ToneCheck because I believe most communication damage is preventable. All it takes is one moment of awareness before you hit send. ToneCheck creates that moment.

What ToneCheck Does

ToneCheck is an AI-powered message analyzer that reads your tone, detects emotional risk, and shows you exactly how different people in your life would react — before you send anything.

Key features:

  • Risk Score — rates your message from Safe to Very High Risk
  • Persona Reactions — simulates how your Friend, Boss, and Partner would each respond
  • Escalation Timeline — tracks if your communication is getting better or worse over a session
  • Smart Suggestions — rewrites your message in 3 tones: diplomatic, neutral, and direct
  • Live Tone Preview — shows sentiment shifting in real time as you type

How I Built It

I built ToneCheck entirely through MeDo using conversation-based prompting — no manual coding from scratch.

The stack MeDo helped me build:

  • Frontend — React with live tone analysis UI, animated risk badges, and confetti for safe messages
  • AI Layer — Claude API integration for deep tone, sentiment, and intent analysis
  • Database — Supabase for storing session history and escalation data
  • Backend — Supabase Edge Functions handling all AI calls and message processing

I structured my MeDo conversations in layers:

  1. First I described the core problem and asked MeDo to design the architecture
  2. Then I built each feature one by one through prompting
  3. Finally I asked MeDo to connect everything and handle edge cases

The entire app went from idea to deployed product through conversation. No switching between tools, no context loss.

Most Impressive Feature MeDo Generated

Without a doubt — the Persona Reactions System.

When I described what I wanted — "show how three different people would emotionally react to the same message" — MeDo built a system that renders realistic chat bubbles for Friend, Boss, and Partner, each with a completely different emotional response to the same text.

This feature makes the invisible visible. You can literally see your message through someone else's eyes. That was the moment I knew ToneCheck was something special.

What I Learned

  • Tone is contextual — the same words land completely differently depending on your relationship with the reader
  • AI can create empathy — when used right, AI doesn't replace human connection, it protects it
  • MeDo removes the barrier between having an idea and shipping a real product — the gap that stops most people from building never existed here

Challenges I Faced

1. Getting the AI to be consistent Early versions of the risk scoring were inconsistent — the same message would score differently on each analysis. I solved this by refining the prompt structure through MeDo to enforce consistent JSON output with defined scoring criteria.

2. Making Persona Reactions feel real Generic reactions felt hollow. I worked with MeDo to give each persona a distinct personality profile so Friend, Boss, and Partner always respond in character — not just with different words but with different emotional logic.

3. Escalation Detection Tracking whether a conversation is getting worse over time required session-level memory. MeDo helped me design a Supabase schema that stores each message score and calculates trend direction automatically.

What's Next for ToneCheck

  • Browser extension that works inside Gmail, WhatsApp Web, and LinkedIn
  • Custom personas — analyze how your specific contacts might react
  • Team version for workplace communication coaching
  • Mobile app for on-the-go message checking

Final Thought

ToneCheck isn't about censoring yourself. It's about choosing how you show up in your relationships. One message at a time.
