Inspiration
Online gaming has become one of the largest forms of digital entertainment, yet many competitive gaming platforms still face challenges around transparency, trust, and accessibility. We were inspired by the idea of combining a timeless strategy game with modern blockchain technology to create a platform where players can compete fairly, own their digital assets, and receive rewards securely.
Our goal was not simply to build another online game. We wanted to demonstrate that blockchain can improve the player experience by making competitions more transparent, reducing payment friction, and creating new opportunities for players worldwide.
What it does
TonCheckers is a competitive multiplayer checkers platform built on the TON blockchain. Players can create or join matches, participate in tournaments, deposit and withdraw TON, track their rankings, and compete for rewards in a secure and transparent environment.
The platform uses a custodial wallet system to simplify blockchain interactions, allowing both experienced crypto users and newcomers to enjoy the game without having to deal with complicated wallet management.
How we built it
TonCheckers was built using a modern full-stack architecture.
Frontend
- React
- TypeScript
- Vite
- Tailwind CSS
Backend
- Node.js
- Express.js
- PostgreSQL
- Redis
- WebSockets
Blockchain
- TON Blockchain
- TON Connect
- Custodial wallet infrastructure
Infrastructure
- Railway
- Cloudflare Pages
- Docker
- GitHub
The backend is organized into modular services that manage authentication, matchmaking, gameplay, tournaments, wallets, treasury operations, notifications, analytics, and real-time communication.
Challenges we ran into
Developing a real-time multiplayer platform introduced several engineering challenges.
Synchronizing game state between multiple players while maintaining fairness required careful handling of WebSocket events and server-side validation.
Integrating blockchain payments without making the user experience overly technical required designing a custodial wallet architecture that balances security with simplicity.
Building reliable matchmaking, tournament scheduling, and automated reward distribution also required careful planning to ensure the platform remains scalable as more players join.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional multiplayer checkers platform.
- Successfully integrated TON blockchain payments.
- Developed a secure custodial wallet system.
- Implemented real-time multiplayer gameplay using WebSockets.
- Created tournament and leaderboard functionality.
- Designed a scalable backend architecture ready for future growth.
- Deployed a live web application that users can access today.
What we learned
This project taught us that building production-ready software goes far beyond writing code.
We learned how to design scalable backend services, manage real-time communication, integrate blockchain technology responsibly, and build systems that prioritize both performance and user experience.
Most importantly, we learned that technology creates the greatest value when it removes complexity instead of adding it.
What's next for TonCheckers
Our vision extends beyond a single game.
Future development includes AI-powered matchmaking and player insights, seasonal competitions, enhanced anti-cheat systems, spectator mode, game replay functionality, additional strategy board games, NFT-based achievements, and a public API that enables developers and tournament organizers to build on top of the platform.
Our long-term goal is to grow TonCheckers into a complete competitive gaming ecosystem that makes blockchain gaming accessible, transparent, and rewarding for players everywhere.
