Inspiration

I wanted to make a party game with quick turn around, so even when you are knocked out you arnt waiting long to come back in for another round. I wanted something inherently social, and fast paced. I took some inspiration for the horizon world "Spin the Bottle". I liked the social nature of the game. Originally the players were going to be locked to their platform. I found it more fun to let players hop between platforms in the end to add some extra action and skill to the game.

What it does

Royale Flush is a party game were 2-8 people compete to be the last man standing. Players are placed on platforms above a giant toilet and given plunger guns to try and knock their competition in. Hitting targets will destroy the platform underneath.

How we built it

I managed to do most of the art with horizon public assets, and then modeled whatever was missing myself. I prototyped the concept to make sure everything felt fun and then built out the game runner that progresses players through.

Challenges we ran into

The physics system still needs a lot of work. If you are trying to venture outside the existing projectile system, you are in for a world of hurt. I had to resort to strange work arounds like arbitrary delays before enacting force, constantly freezing and unfreezing of physics entities, trying to prewarm physics entities. I would say a majority of the time was spent trying to get the plunger physics to behave, and even in the end I still never got it full working how I would like.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The game is fun! I was able to play with some friends and we managed to kill an hour or so just playing back to back rounds! Also the hat system and TP throne were fun to add. The winner gets a plunger crown to wear into the next match, where the losers get poop hats. Some last minute added features like the bouncing inflatables add some fun luck to the game which I'm proud of.

What we learned

Small, simple, focused multiplayer games seem to work well in horizon. Mechanics work best when they are intuitive and don't need to be overly tutorialized.

What's next for Royale Flush

Some extra decoration in the level would be fun to add, as well as another pass on the UI to add some art in. Maybe some additional cosmetics as well!
