Inspiration
TogetherX HelpHub was inspired by the idea that real-world problems often go unsolved because people don’t know where to find help or how to contribute. Whether it’s a local cleanup, a community emergency, or a volunteer request, we wanted to build a system where people can quickly connect and take action together instead of acting alone. It was also inspired by the theme of MasseyHacks which was "How does your product impact the commmunity".
What it does
TogetherX HelpHub is a platform where users can:
Create “Help Hubs” (real-world tasks or crises) Join existing help requests based on skills or availability Track how many people are needed and how many have joined View member profiles and participation Manage and complete community-driven tasks
How we built it
We built TogetherX HelpHub using a full-stack approach:
Django (Python) for backend logic, routing, and database management HTML + CSS for structure and modern UI design JavaScript (JS) for interactive frontend features (dynamic UI updates, form behavior, and improving user experience) Bootstrap-inspired + custom glassmorphism styling for a reponsive and modern dashboard look
We also used:
Session-based authentication for secure user login system Django ORM models to manage users, crises, and assignments efficiently Core logic example:
We dynamically calculate available slots using:
remaining_people=people_needed−assigned_users
Challenges we ran into
Handling assignment logic without duplicating users in a crisis Keeping the UI consistent across multiple pages Fixing calculation bugs in remaining people count Managing session-based authentication properly Making sure Django template logic stayed clean and readable
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully functional CRUD-based crisis/help system Designed a modern, responsive dashboard UI Implemented dynamic real-time updates for participation counts Created role-based permissions (creator vs participant) Achieved a clean, professional SaaS-style interface
What we learned
How to structure a full-stack Django project Importance of database relationships (ForeignKey, many-to-one logic) How to debug logic errors in ORM queries UI/UX principles for dashboard design How small backend mistakes can affect frontend display
What's next for TogetherX
Add real-time updates using WebSockets (live participation updates) Introduce messaging between volunteers Introduce Admin to verify if the HelpHub is eligible for high school volunteer hours Add location-based matching for nearby Help Hubs Build mobile-friendly app version Add verification system for trusted users Introduce impact tracking (how many lives/help actions completed)
