Problem Statement

Each year, in the United States alone, it is estimated that over 3.5 million individuals, along with 700,000 minors undergo the experience of being homeless. But what exactly does this mean? Homelessness, as defined by SOAR Works, is “when an individual lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, provided that no subsequent housing has been identified and the individual lacks support networks or resources needed to obtain said housing”. As a result of this lack of resources, homeless individuals are forced to fend for themselves through brute and tough conditions, oftentimes experiencing a range of issues and problems that would negatively impact them and their mental health. Such issues include physical and verbal violence from other members of the community, lack of access to food and proper sanitation, and limited access to proper healthcare.

This constant stress that is experienced by the homeless population, in turn, leads to a wide array of mental health, and emotional problems, further grounding a positive feedback cycle for negative and harmful behavior including alcohol and drug abuse. Even though there are many institutes in place that help individuals deal with mental health crises, many don’t accommodate the lack of money that homeless people have, taking into account their current situation. As a result, research has shown that homeless people are about 401% more likely to attempt suicide than their non-homeless counterparts.

To combat these issues, I came up with the concept of Together United, a mobile application that aims to help homeless individuals overcome their mental health issues by providing them a network of caring friends and individuals, while simultaneously providing them access to food and shelter.
