💡 Inspiration

Solo travel is a dream many people share. The freedom to explore, reflect, meet new people, and escape the routine feels exciting and liberating. Whether it’s a student celebrating the end of exams, a professional on a career break, or someone simply craving solitude and change, the idea sounds perfect. But when it’s time to actually go, reality kicks in. First-time solo travellers often don’t know where to begin. Is this place safe? Will I be able to afford it? How do I convince my family? What if something goes wrong?

Once you’re on the road, things don’t get easier. Every decision is on you: where to go, what to eat, how to stay safe, how to communicate, how to navigate. Even small challenges feel heavier when you’re alone in an unfamiliar place.

And after it’s over, there’s no simple way to reflect, learn from the experience, or share it meaningfully. You’re left with scattered photos, half-written notes, and moments that quickly fade.

I wanted to rethink the experience. Not just as a trip, but as a human moment. Not just about where to go, but about how to feel safe, connected, and supported without giving up the joy of solitude. That’s where the idea for Together was born.

Together is not a social media app. It's not a dating app. It's a quiet companion for solo travellers. An optional way to connect with people who share your vibe, your values, or your itinerary without pressure, without noise. The app is for people like students, creatives, remote workers, or simply anyone who wants to explore the world alone but doesn’t want to feel alone all the time. It helps you make light, respectful, and intentional connections while preserving your independence.

🚀 What It Does

Together helps solo travellers:

  • Match with others who are in the same city, during the same time, with shared interests and vibes
  • Propose or join light activities (walks, coffee, co-working, markets…)
  • Stay in control with privacy-first features (invisible mode, check-in alerts, no random messaging)
  • Post short anonymous messages to a local wall if they want to connect passively or ask something
  • Feel less alone, even when choosing to stay solo

🛠️ How I Built It

I designed the entire app in Figma, including the full UX and UI flow. I created all high-fidelity screens based on real-life solo travel scenarios. To validate the direction, I ran informal surveys and collected feedback from friends and acquaintances who have travelled alone (or wanted to but didn’t dare). Their insights helped me prioritize emotional safety, simplicity, and flexibility over flashy features.

🎯 Challenges I Ran Into

It was difficult to balance “connection” and “boundaries.” Most existing travel or meetup apps feel either too cold (purely logistical) or too aggressive (social pressure, romantic assumptions). I had to explore a lot of subtle UI choices and microcopy to create an experience that felt safe, warm, and calm especially for introverted or cautious travellers.

Also, working solo on the whole design research, thinking, layout, UI polish, and user flow was intense. But deeply rewarding.

🏆 Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • I created a fully functional UX flow and high-fidelity prototype, ready for testing or handoff to devs
  • I kept the app clean and emotionally respectful, avoiding the typical noisy UX traps
  • I tested ideas with real feedback, not just assumptions
  • I designed something that could genuinely help someone feel a little safer, seen, or less alone

📚 What I Learned

Designing for emotion is hard and necessary. The most important part wasn’t picking the right font or layout, but understanding why people hesitate to travel alone, or why they feel invisible during their trips.

I learned to slow down, listen more, and design with empathy. That was the whole point of this challenge, and I’m grateful for it.

✈️ What's next for Together

I’d love to test the prototype with real solo travellers across different regions and age groups. With more feedback, Together could evolve into a real app or service, especially for digital nomads, first-time backpackers, or women travelling alone.

I’d also consider adding:

  • In-app journaling after meetups
  • Curated local tips submitted by other solo travellers
  • Mini safety guide for each city

Together isn’t trying to make travel louder. It’s here to make solo travel feel a little more human.
