Inspiration
Group chats are terrible at accountability.
Families lose track of medicine schedules. Friends plan workouts in messages that get buried. Roommates and teams juggle tasks, events, and reminders across WhatsApp, Notes, and Google Calendar — and still miss things.
We built Together because coordination shouldn't feel like chaos. One shared space per group (family, gym crew, roommates, work team) with tasks, calendar, notes, and chat — plus health-oriented flows like medicine reminders and group fitness activities — so people manage time and health in one place, not across five apps.
What it does
Together is a full-stack web app for shared life management:
- Spaces — isolated hubs for family, friends, fitness groups, or work crews
- Tasks — assign work, track completion, send assignment emails
- Calendar — events, deadlines, and recurring activities in one view
- Notes — shared context that doesn't disappear in chat scrollback
- Chat — threaded discussion tied to the same space
Health & time features
- Medicine reminders — recurring events/tasks with clear ownership (e.g. "Dad — evening dose at 8 PM")
- Group fitness — schedule walks, gym sessions, or challenges; everyone sees the plan and can confirm
- Tell Together — natural-language input to create events and tasks ("Remind us to take vitamins every morning at 7" / "Yoga Saturday 6 AM with the group")
UX
- Day/night themes
- PWA-ready — installable on phone/desktop
- Invite-based onboarding so only your group gets in
How we built it
Frontend: Next.js + TypeScript, responsive UI, theme switching, PWA shell
Backend & data: Neon Postgres + Prisma for spaces, members, tasks, events, notes, and messages
Auth: Clerk — sign-in, sessions, and per-space access control
Email: Resend for task assignment and reminder notifications
AI layer: intent parsing for Tell Together — user text → structured task/event payloads (title, time, recurrence, assignee)
Deploy: Vercel for the live demo
Architecture (high level)
[ \text{User input} \xrightarrow{\text{NL parse}} {\text{task}, \text{event}, t, \text{assignee}} \xrightarrow{\text{Prisma}} \text{Postgres} \xrightarrow{\text{notify}} \text{Resend} ]
Recurring reminders (medicine, fitness) map to events with recurrence rules; completion tracking uses the task model with assignees and status.
Challenges we ran into
- Group state vs. chat noise — Chat and planning had to stay linked but separate; we used spaces so tasks/events don't get lost in messages.
- Natural language → reliable structure — "Remind mom about her medicine tonight" must become a valid event with time and owner; we iterated on parsing and validation before writing to the DB.
- Permissions in shared spaces — Who can create reminders, assign tasks, or edit group fitness events? Clerk + space membership rules took careful modeling.
- Recurring health reminders — Medicine and fitness need repeat schedules, not one-off todos; modeling recurrence in Prisma without overcomplicating the UI was non-trivial.
- Mobile-first habits — Health use cases are often on-phone; PWA + responsive layouts mattered as much as desktop polish.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Shipped a live, deployed coordination app — not just a mockup
- End-to-end stack: auth, DB, email, AI parsing, frontend
- Tell Together — plain English → real tasks and calendar entries
- Health angle on a general product: medicine reminders and group fitness without a separate "health app"
- Clean space-based model that scales from family care to friend groups to small teams
- Open source on GitHub with a public demo
What we learned
- Time management and health management overlap — reminders, schedules, and accountability are the same primitives (tasks + events + notifications).
- Groups need ownership — "Someone should remind Dad" fails; "Assigned to X, due at Y" works.
- NL interfaces help adoption — especially for non-technical family members setting medicine or fitness reminders.
- Full-stack integration is the hard part — auth boundaries, DB schema, and email/notifications must align or the product feels broken.
- Shipping beats feature sprawl: one space, one calendar, one task list — then layer health use cases on top.
What's next for Together
- Smarter reminders — snooze, escalation if a medicine task isn't marked done, optional SMS/push
- Fitness streaks & group stats — weekly goals, attendance on group activities, lightweight leaderboards
- Health templates — "Family medicine schedule," "30-day group walk challenge" one-click setups
- Wearable / calendar sync — Google Calendar export, Apple Health-style activity hooks
- Offline-friendly PWA — view today's reminders and mark tasks complete without connectivity
- Privacy controls — health spaces with stricter visibility (e.g. medicine logs visible only to caregivers)
