Inspiration
I have a toddler, and my guess is that most people who become adults were toddlers at one point in their lives (though I do not have the evidence to back it up). Sometimes, my little toddler seems more like a tiny terrorist than just a little human (especially when she demands that I get her water with ice late at night and hold the cup so she can sip from the straw) but most of the time she is the joy of my life and the motivation to keep me from turning into a slug.
We do a lot of activities together, from swimming (she thinks she is the greatest swimmer in the world despite the fact that I constantly have to fish her out of the water when she goes in too deep) to playing in gyms (she is furious at me that I can't go into the tiny play area tunnels with her) to pretty much any other activity my stress-addled mind can think up.
My wife is actually much better at thinking up things to do with our little person, and when I realized what Party Rock was capable of a little light bulb went off and I said to myself: "Hey, what if there was something that could help me figure this stuff out on my own without needing to constantly bother my wife?"
Husbands everywhere, rejoice!
What it does
It asks you for your toddlers age and gives three suggested activities (with a guide on how to do it), pictures of those activities for motivation, and the ability to chat and ask follow-ups. The activities are broken down as:
1) Outdoor activity (like hiking) 2) Indoor activity (like arts and crafts) 3) Spark activity (like building a pillow fort)
How we built it
Using Party Rock and AI. I took everything I had learned playing around with party rock, building Alexa skills that tap into AI, and raising a toddler to craft the prompts.
Challenges we ran into
There is a natural protection for AI to not want to generate a lot of different prompts and it filters quite a few key words (especially in image generation). Those filters are incredibly important and fully understandable considering children are involved, but they can end up being draconian and have a tendency to over filter. This can be tricky to work around when crafting prompts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Now I can get fully implemented suggestions about things to do with my toddler to help her learn and grow and become a lovely person without needing to always ask my wife for help!
What we learned
We learned a lot about Party Rock, which is an incredibly useful tool in creating actual apps that people can use with almost no effort. If you have a basic understanding of prompt generation and working with AI then Party Rock can really jumpstart your plans. I have worked extensively with AI when building tools for my Alexa Skills and Games, and this was remarkably easy and powerful.
What's next for Toddler Learning Activities
I want to get more user feedback and find out ways that I can make it better. What else might be useful to learn about toddlers? Is there anything missing that I could also add to enhance it?
