Inspiration

Our project, Toddle, helps our tech newbs to get acquainted and use their devices like a pro! Smartphones are literally everywhere, there is no denying that. People of all kinds, from all countries across all age groups are gradually adapting to the sudden change, and some people, take more time to learn and adapt. It is not surprising for elders to be seen struggling with learning how to operate it. Little kids, too. And even though most of us millennials and the Gen XYZs have pretty much made it our life and blood, it is noticeably hard for people in under-represented communities and lower economic backgrounds to learn and adapt to it. We've witnessed it. We know some people struggle, and we wanted to help :)

What it does

Basically, this app teaches you how to navigate through your phone. It will teach you how to set your settings, connect your Wi-Fi, install apps, set reminders, simple tasks like these that someone might feel embarrassed to ask others. Ultimately, it teaches them how to use apps like Weather, Google Maps, Gmail, etc., how to send and receive messages, make a video call, send an email, and if they are getting feisty(:D), they will learn how to open social media accounts.

How we built it

We built the app using Flutter, a recent but powerful toolkit to develop apps across all devices including mobile, web and desktop.

Challenges we ran into

We are undergraduate students in our second year, and just getting started with App development. Of course, we ran into challenges, dozens of them. We didn't find a right platform to start learning Flutter. We faced issues with the code at so many points and we owe our gratitude to Stack Overflow for fixing it all :D. We are friends at college too and the most difficult part was to implement this whole project virtually. Oh well, we're just glad that the world is getting better. :)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have created sample pages for apps like Weather, Google Maps, YouTube, Instagram, Google Drive, just to have a basic introduction as we plan along about how best to grow our project. Even though our project is a mammoth task and we have done so little, we are proud of accomplishing it.

What we learned

It is at this career stage when a lot of people like us feel like we are not smart enough. Though not the same, it is similar to when elders feel the generation gap through the glowing screens, and students and adults from economically weaker sections feel embarrassed to ask for help. We have changed so fast, some of us can't keep up. And that is okay.

What's next for Toddle

It is imperative that we contemplate on what the future holds if our values hold true. In the next five years, we want to see Toddle as the path to gaining digital literacy, for everyone. We mean it, everyone, regardless of any divide, should gain basic skills. It will give them a voice, give them a platform to do all their tasks with less effort, provide opportunities for them, and most of all, we want them to keep up with the world. No one wants to be left behind.
