Today’s Lie

Inspiration

Deception has always fascinated people. From classic novels to modern TV dramas, stories built on lies, mystery, and hidden truths consistently capture attention. Even today, content centered around deception remains incredibly popular.

This inspired Today’s Lie — a social, daily game designed to spark interaction, curiosity, and debate among players.

What It Does

Today’s Lie is a monthly-driven daily game:

Submission Phase (Days 1–15)

  • Players submit statements that could be either true or false
  • Each valid submission ** costs 25 Bits** (in-game currency)

Review Phase (Days 16–30)

  • Submissions for the next month are randomly selected (if not selected 25 bits is refunded to their accounts)
  • Selected submissions are reviewed and prepared for gameplay

Daily Gameplay (Following Month)

  • Each day, one submission is revealed
  • Players vote whether it is a Lie or a Truth

Results & Rewards

  • Results are revealed the next day
  • Voting costs 3 Bits
  • Correct vote → +10 Bits
  • If the submitter fools the majority → +75 Bits

Leaderboard

  • Players are ranked by total gains
  • Purchased Bits do not affect leaderboard rankings

How We Built It

  • Built using Reddit’s Devvit React template
  • Integrated Redis for:
    • Time-based logic
    • Submission tracking
    • Daily content rotation
  • API safeguards ensure game rules are enforced
(e.g. submissions are blocked after the 15-day limit)

The game is fully automated and can run without developer intervention.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • User profile pictures
We couldn’t find a reliable way to display Reddit user profile pictures inside the game. This is something we plan to solve in future updates.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

  • Fully self-operating game lifecycle
  • Fair and balanced reward system
  • Reliable time-based logic using Redis

What We Learned

  • Practical usage of Redis for state and time management
  • Designing rule-enforced APIs
  • Building scalable systems for daily content delivery

What’s Next for Today’s Lie

  1. UI Improvements
Replace the current prototype UI with a polished design.
  2. Admin Dashboard
Create tools to review, approve, and moderate submissions.
  3. Bits Shop Integration
Add an actual in-game shop powered by Reddit Gold. (currently it is js mockup)
