Inspiration

To New York We Go! is part of an ongoing effort to adapt a nostalgic family adventure series into short-form, AI-assisted animated storytelling.

The original story was written by a young author over 15 years ago and follows Danny Hoopenbiller™, a curious young inventor, his eccentric grandfather, and their family as they stumble into increasingly unexpected adventures.

This project explores how AI tools can help bring long-form narrative IP into modern, accessible animated formats.

What It Does

This project is an animated music short that blends storytelling, humor, and character-driven narrative using AI-assisted production.

The short functions as both a standalone musical moment and a chapter-based narrative beat within a larger serialized universe. Music, visuals, and pacing were generated and refined using AI tools to create a cinematic, family-friendly experience.

How We Built It

  • Story elements were adapted from an existing chapter-based book
  • Lyrics and musical structure were developed using AI-assisted workflows
  • Animation and visuals were created using AI video generation tools
  • Music and vocals were generated with AI music tools
  • Final timing, transitions, and polish were completed in post-production

The workflow demonstrates how legacy stories can be reimagined using modern generative techniques.

Challenges

A key challenge was preserving narrative clarity while working within short-form constraints. Ensuring characters remained emotionally consistent across AI-generated scenes required careful iteration and reference continuity.

Another challenge was balancing humor, music, and story progression in under two minutes.

What We Learned

AI-assisted filmmaking works best when guided by strong existing narrative structure. Rather than replacing storytelling, AI tools can accelerate production while preserving tone, continuity, and emotional intent.

This approach shows promise for adapting long-form IP into episodic micro-content.

What’s Next

This project is part of a larger exploration into AI-assisted serialized storytelling. Future work will expand the Danny Hoopenbiller™ universe through additional chapters, music-driven shorts, and longer narrative arcs.
