The growing global burden of cardiovascular diseases and the increasing demand for precise, real-time diagnostic tools inspired us to develop a system that can quickly and accurately detect abnormal heart rhythms. With advancements in deep learning and AI, we saw an opportunity to apply these technologies to healthcare, aiming to improve diagnostic efficiency and reduce human error in ECG analysis.

What it does

Our system automatically detects abnormal heart rhythms from ECG data using a deep learning model, specifically a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) autoencoder. By pre-processing and analyzing the ECG signals, it identifies potential anomalies, enhancing the accuracy and speed of diagnostics in cardiovascular disease management.

How we built it

We used Python and TensorFlow to implement deep learning models, leveraging CNN autoencoders for anomaly detection in ECG signals. The data was pre-processed to ensure high-quality inputs for training. GPU acceleration was utilized to optimize the model’s performance, enabling faster analysis and increased diagnostic efficiency.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges included pre-processing noisy ECG signals to ensure accurate detection and optimizing the model to handle large datasets efficiently. Tuning the CNN autoencoders for better anomaly detection required multiple iterations and extensive testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud to have developed a system that improves the speed and accuracy of ECG analysis, potentially saving lives through early detection of cardiovascular abnormalities. Successfully integrating CNN autoencoders for ECG anomaly detection was a significant achievement, along with optimizing it for GPU acceleration to boost performance.

What we learned

We gained valuable experience in handling medical datasets, especially in pre-processing noisy data for deep learning. We also learned how to fine-tune CNN autoencoders for specific healthcare applications and the importance of optimizing models for real-time performance in critical scenarios.

What's next for To detect abnormal heart rhythms

We plan to expand the model to include multi-lead ECG data for more comprehensive analysis and integrate it into mobile healthcare applications for remote monitoring. Additionally, we aim to further refine the system’s accuracy and reduce the false positive rate to ensure it can be reliably used in clinical settings.
