Inspiration
Our team was looking for ways to help students who don't get good grades or study well. Then, we thought of the peer tutoring classes that our school runs, a system in that students teach other students who need help, and we wanted to move it to the Internet. Therefore, we started this project, to create a mutually beneficial website where student tutors can teach others and receive community service hours, and student tutees who have classes with them can improve their grades and study better.
What it does
Our website, TNT, can connect students who want to teach and students who want to be taught about ANYTHING. The topic can be academic courses like ELA, mathematics, science, etc., or extracurricular activities like sports, music, chess, etc. By teaching others, student tutors can earn community service hours or fancy careers for their resumes. And by being taught, student tutees can improve their skills in learning.
How we built it
We used the website creator Wix to create the first half of our website, including the sections: the Homepage, FAQ, Tutor/Tutee, and Sign up/Log in. The majority of our team did not know how to code, but one of our teammates did know how to so he coded the rest of the website- including finding tutors/tutees, filtering through, and finding the correct match for them.
Challenges we ran into
One of the difficulties we faced while completing this project is that the majority of our team did not know how to code while one member of our team did know how to. In the beginning, four members of our team started on the Wix website creator while the fifth team member started coding the website. But however, in the end, we came up with the idea to combine our websites; there will be a button in the Wix website which will lead to the coded website. That way, both of the websites will go into use.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of our idea because nowadays, there are many students who need community service hours and many students who need someone to help them with their studies. Also, the design of our webpage is neat. We came up with a lot of useful ideas in the group through video conferencing and used Wix to put the ideas into action. We also referenced other types of educational websites (such as Khan Academy) while designing it.
What we learned
We learned how to work in groups through this project. We had very limited time and some of our group members had time differences, in addition, the whole process had to be done in only a few days. Therefore, we learned that it's important to make the best use of our time. We found that video conferencing is a great way because it is very efficient and we can better distribute tasks through it. Not only that, but we also learned how to use Wix to create websites and more about programming with this project. This assignment was very challenging for us, but by asking the mentors and searching on the internet, we managed to get our program to work properly.
What's next for TNT
The next step for Tutors N Tutees will be expanding our website. When many of the extracurricular activities are included on our website, hopefully, there will be more tutors who will sign up and TNT can expand in all different kinds of directions: sports, music, speech/debate, chess, programming, etc. We also thought about making TNT include a virtual meeting function where tutors and tutees can just meet on our website.
