Inspiration
Ricky and Manny’s warmth, involvement, and dedication to their faith community inspired us to collaborate with them in creating a website to better highlight the faith and fellowship central to the Filipino Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Boston. “Tiwala” means “faith” in Tagalog, and we chose this name for our project to reflect the faith-centered community that the Filipino Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Boston (or FAAB) represents.
How we built it
We utilized the following throughout our project: Next.js 14+, React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, FullCalendar.js, Prisma (database), Vercel (hosting), and Cloudinary (images and videos). To address FAAB’s unique user needs, we ideated, wireframed, and prototyped a new website using Figma. With a modern interface, interactive admin dashboard, and streamlined navigation bar, we gave the blog a refresh that honors both their long history and their continued commitment to the Filipino Catholic community in Boston.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we encountered was identifying how each of our varied skillsets could be harnessed to produce a functional final product. While some team members excelled at full-stack web development and UX/UI design and research, others contributed through their keen sense of ideation and writing.
What we learned
Participating in this website redesign has been an incredible opportunity to enhance our various skillsets. We harnessed our skills related to user research, user experience/user interface (UX/UI) design, collaboration, problem-solving, front-end web development, and back-end web development. Moreover, we experienced being able to collaborate with an organization in order to meet their specific user needs. Furthermore, we learned to work together in a way that harnessed everyone’s strengths while also providing opportunities for individuals to grow in other areas.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of effectively collaborating to build a complete full-stack experience that allows for accessible and intuitive content creation and editing! For many of us, it was our first time working with a content management system, so we are very happy with our final website and how quickly we were able to create our blog and admin center.
What's next for Tiwala
Going forward, we want to continue focusing on building community and adding features (e.g. advanced text-to-speech) to make the site more accessible to individuals of all abilities. To make it easier to people to connect through their faith, we also would like to explore additional opportunities for social media integration. We also want to add user accounts for church members to create posts and upload media as well as additional admin accounts for church staff to create events, moderate posts, & edit website details.
