Inspiration

Conventional oral rehydration solutions (ORS) rely heavily on high Sodium Chloride (NaCl) and glucose concentrationsspan_1span_1. While effective for standard dehydration, these traditional formulations present severe medical risks for patients with hypertension (inducing blood pressure spikes and cardiovascular complications) and diabetes (triggering acute hyperglycemia)span_2span_2. Inspired by the urgent clinical need for safe rehydration therapy in high-risk metabolic patients, "Dio 01 (1st Edition)" was developed to replace harmful NaCl and high-glycemic sugars with targeted electrolytes and low-glycemic functional carbohydratesspan_3span_3.

What it does

Developed by researcher MD. Abu Hujaif (Alexy Layho), "Dio 01" is a novel anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive oral saline formulation designed for safe fluid maintenance and energy synthesisspan_4span_4:

  • NaCl-Free Electrolyte Balance: Replaces traditional salt with Potassium Lactate ($C_3H_5KO_3$), Potassium Chloride ($KCl$), and Magnesium Lactate ($C_6H_{10}MgO$) to promote vascular relaxation and lower blood pressurespan_5span_5.
  • Low-Glycemic Energy Supply: Incorporates D-Tagatose ($C_6H_{12}O_6$), a slowly metabolized sugar isomer that yields ATP energy without inducing blood glucose or insulin spikesspan_6span_6.
  • Physiological pH Buffering: Uses Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate ($C_6H_5Na_3O_7 \cdot 2H_2O$) to stabilize solution pH within physiological range ($\approx 7.2 - 7.4$)span_7span_7.
  • Multi-Form Delivery: Designed for long-shelf-life powder sachets, ready-to-use filtered sterile solutions, and large-volume clinical jarsspan_8span_8.

How we built it

The biochemistry and stoichiometry were formulated through clinical electrolyte research at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of Science and Technology, Chittagong (USTC)span_9span_9. The compound matrix was optimized per $1000\text{ mL}$ of purified water, maintaining precise enzymatic co-factors with Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate ($ZnSO_4 \cdot H_2O$) and Magnesium ionsspan_10span_10.

Challenges we faced

Determining the exact buffering balance to avoid metabolic alkalosis while maintaining stable bio-availability for potassium and magnesium lactates during filtration and storagespan_11span_11.

What's next for Dio 01

Conducting clinical trials for glycemic and vascular impact, establishing shelf-life stability tests for powdered formulations, and exploring partnerships with pharmaceutical manufacturers for mass productionspan_12span_12.
