Inspiration
The most recent survey of literacy internationally concluded that 13.6% of the population is illiterate. Although this seems like a small number, overall, that is a significant amount of the population that makes it hard to read due to little education. I decided to make something that keeps these people aware of the ongoing crisis and how it affects them.
What it does
This web app is a simple COVID-19 dashboard that has 3 cards at the top indicating the numbers of people that are infected. At the bottom is a graph that graphs the above data. There is a dropdown that lets people change the different countries and territories they can access.
How we built it
I started out with brainstorming ideas before finally trying to use two different problems in our society. Then I decided to implement my recent learning of React to create the dashboard to help illiterate people. I also used the Mathdroid COVID-19 API to create my graphs and numbers.
Challenges we ran into
I was a newbie to React, so I would have constant challenges of being able to complete a task. I did not know a lot about the different features, so I spent time around that.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud that I was able to create a dashboard and that I was able to do it within the time limit because I am very new to React.
What we learned
I learned that React is actually a very cool tool when creating web applications and has applications outside of websites. It is something that I will continue using. I also liked using different Javascript tools like Chart.js. APIs were also interesting and fun to use.
What's next for Literate COVID
We hope to gain many users as gaining users could directly help end the Coronavirus sooner. I want illiterate people to understand the pandemic that surrounds them and I want to be able to help them. I also wanted to add Google's 5 Steps in a nice design, but was unable to add that.
