Inspiration
We were inspired by the Día de Muertos Modelo mural with the interactive AR skeleton. The idea of spreading awareness and appreciation of other cultures was a concept that really resonated with us. Therefore, we reflected on our own heritage and shared them with one another to create three cultural experiences connected by a passion for adventure and learning (and drinking). Each drink is inspired by a cocktail from each region as well. We hope to use this launch to cultivate more appreciation and respect for one another.
What it does
In our exciting launch of Tipsy Travels, the customer can purchase a variety of sparkling cocktails that are sure to leave you with a smile. The QR code on the bottle takes you to unique, immersive AR metaverse experiences for each country. You can then stamp your virtual drink passport via our website and save your progress in our database.
How we built it
AR: Siobhan crafted experiences using Metaverse Studio, added audio from free websites (Fesliyan Studios), and input graphics both of our own creation and from the Metaverse. Can/Label Graphics: Austin used designs from each country as inspiration for the can labels. He then made them using Photoshop and Canva. We went through an iterative refinement process to incorporate team critique into the designs. Website: Saranya created a functioning prototype using Proto.io. She also received a lot of feedback and improved her eye for website design as she went. Despite it being out of her comfort zone, she absolutely crushed it as seen in the demo video! Database: Vishnu created this database in SQL and filled it with mock input. He used CockroachDB and DataGrip for this, and it allowed us to see how we would store the stamps collected by the users.
Challenges we ran into
Vishnu's team disbanded midway the hackathon which was a personal challenge. However, it meant that our team could get to know and work with him! He added new skillsets to the team that made us stronger. Another challenge was getting a functioning website with our limited frontside knowledge. However, by harnessing proto.io, Saranya was able to create a working prototype for how the website will run.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We each overcame hurdles in our respective work, and we're proud of our ability to dive into new software for this hackathon. We are also proud of the ability to share our own cultures and learn about one another through this experience since that was our main goal with the global themes.
What we learned
Websites are hard! We're grateful for the tech talks around web development, but our strong suits remain in other areas. We also learned the importance of communication and teamwork as we were able to create an incredible launch within such a short period of time.
What's next for Tipsy Travels
We'd love to continue developing the website and have it connect with the database properly. We also would like to brainstorm more drinks and AR experiences to add to our product line.
