Tips4Kicks is an initiative that repurposes medical sharps caps into durable shoe soles, transforming medical waste into sustainable footwear.
Medical sharps caps, which are primarily made from the non-biodegradable plastic polypropylene, can take hundreds of years to decompose. With 16 billion injections delivered annually worldwide, the plastic caps of medical syringes and needles often end up in landfills, contributing to the 1-2% of urban waste generated by medical waste.
To address this issue, Tips4Kicks first collects used medical sharps caps from healthcare facilities, sterilizing them through autoclaving, and recycling the polypropylene into high-quality plastic resin. This resin is then molded into durable, flexible, and comfortable shoe soles that meet industry standards. Our shoe soles will directly target the 300 million people who currently lack access to footwear.
By turning medical waste into shoes, Tips4Kicks directly reduces the demand for virgin plastics and cuts the environmental footprint associated with new plastic production. We aim to scale Tips4Kicks through partnerships with healthcare facilities and footwear distributors internationally, encouraging widespread participation in medical waste recycling and supporting greater access to footwear for those in need.
With Tips4Kicks, we aren’t just reducing medical waste, we are providing millions of people in the world with affordable, accessible footwear.
