Inspiration
I wanted a blog for sharing my hobby projects, and I wanted it to be on WordPress because of all the functionality the CMS provides.
How it works
The home page serves as the 'Portfolio' page of recent work I've done. There is also a 'Blog' page, with Disqus integrated on individual post pages for commenting. Part of the intention of the site is to function as an online business card as I get into selling my projects, so I also included an 'About' and a 'Contact' page.
Challenges I ran into
I kept having ideas that were far beyond my own knowledge at the time, so the project pushed me to continually develop new skills so I could get my ideas live on the site.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Wrapping my head around the structure of WordPress sites and adapting a theme I had already made in simple HTML5 and CSS to work with that structure.
What I learned
A lot about the fundamentals of WordPress, and how to develop locally. I also learned how to use the developer tools in my browser to track down classes and IDs in code I didn't write (because it was generated by WordPress) so I could properly target and alter code. In general, I learned quite a bit about the capabilities of the in-browser developer tools.
What's next for Tiny Moon Mercantile
The image gallery for the 'Portfolio' page is the only part that I haven't yet been able to make responsive in the way I intend, and is next on the list of improvements because I want to master the ability to customize galleries. Next after that will be integrating more JavaScript into the site, I'd like to add some on-scroll effects to the navigation, and code my own lightbox effect rather than using a plugin as I am currently.
