Inspiration
We wanted to create a fun and simple game about the fundamentals of farming inspired by Stardew Valley and Minecraft. We also were inspired by games like Egg Inc. to develop a currency system.
What it does
The game creates an environment in which players can grow crops by tilling soil, fertilizing it, and watering. Harvesting crops makes money. To make the gameplay more fun, we made it so that plants took time to grow and would disappear after a while if not harvested. This incentivizes players to stay attentive. We also implemented a prestige system in which players can use their money to buy upgrades that will exponentially increase their earnings.
How we built it
We built both the visual components and code scripts in Godot, using GDScript as a language.
Challenges we ran into
None of us were familiar with Godot or game design before the hackathon, so we all had to learn how to navigate a foreign IDE and learn the syntax of a completely new coding language at very short notice. This made all the scripts and nodes that Godot had to offer quite overwhelming.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our biggest accomplishment was using the background tile maps to simulate the growth of plants. Overall, we are very proud of the finished product we turned out given time constraints and our lack of experience.
What we learned
We learned how to work efficiently as a time, assigning tasks between us in a manner that was productive and manageable for each person.
What's next for Timmy's Tilling Simulator
What's next is to increase the scope of it all - making it so that players can get more land and be able to make their own soil plots, adding more weather effects, and further developing the visual aesthetics and textures of the game to make it as immersive as possible. We are very excited to see how far this game takes us!
