Imagine arriving in Athens, Rome, or Florence for the first time.

You may already know that these cities shaped history, but the people who made them unforgettable are long gone.

What if Socrates could welcome you to Athens, Julius Caesar could tell you the story of Rome, or Leonardo da Vinci could walk beside you through Florence?

Not as distant historical figures from a textbook, but as warm, funny companions sharing the stories only they could tell.

That idea became TimeWalk.

What it does

TimeWalk transforms every landmark into a conversation.

Users can take a photo, enter a location, or use their current location. AI recognizes where they are and instantly brings different historical figures back to life.

These figures become personal guides, introducing the city, the country, its culture, and the way life and history changed over time—all from their own perspectives.

Instead of simply reading historical information, users can experience a place through the eyes of the people who shaped it.

How I built it

I built TimeWalk during the OpenAI Hackathon using OpenAI Codex.

I used AI vision to recognize landmarks and locations, GPT models to create natural conversations, and location context to connect each place with relevant historical figures and stories.

Codex became my pair programmer throughout the hackathon. It helped me quickly build features, debug issues, improve the interface, and turn ideas into a working prototype.

Challenges I ran into

One of the biggest challenges was making historical characters feel human.

I didn't want them to sound like textbooks or generic tour guides. I wanted each person to have a distinct personality and communicate in a warm, humorous, and natural way while still respecting historical context.

Another challenge was connecting photo recognition, location information, character selection, and storytelling into one smooth experience.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud that I turned a simple idea into a working prototype during the hackathon.

TimeWalk can recognize a place and transform it into an interactive historical experience within seconds.

More importantly, I created a different way to explore a city—not by simply reading about history, but by having a conversation with it.

What I learned

I learned that AI can make history feel personal, emotional, and alive.

I also learned how much Codex can accelerate the development process. It allowed me to spend less time writing repetitive code and more time improving the user experience and experimenting with new ideas.

What's next for TimeWalk

Next, I want to add more cities, countries, landmarks, and historical figures.

I also plan to support real-time voice conversations, multiple languages, personalized travel routes, museums, hidden local stories, and AR experiences.

My long-term vision is for every traveler to arrive in a new place and immediately meet the voices that shaped it.
