Inspiration

Have you ever stared at the microwave impatiently, waiting for your food to be done? Have you ever overheated your food causing you to drop it on the floor and waste $20? Well, with Time2Eat, you'll know exactly how much time to heat your food and you'll be entertained in the mean time!

What it does

Time2Eat provides you with the proper heating times for whatever food you need and it provides you with an amusing video for you to watch in the meantime. Our algorithm ensures that the video you're provided is never longer than the duration of your cooking time - we don't want your food getting cold!

How we built it

We used rails to set up the foundation of our website. Then we worked on Cloud9 to add all the images, populate the database with food microwave times and a list of youtube videos

Challenges we ran into

Hosting website on Heroku when most of the time we previewed it locally. We had to migrate our sqlite3 database to postgres - something we hadn't done before.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Linking the database of videos to the database of food items and finding the best video (the one that most closely matches cooking time) for any given item. We also wanted to encourage users to consider adding healthy choices to their meals. When a user looks up a meat or pasta item, a suggestion appears to heat up vegetables with their meal!

What we learned

Using route helper methods, creating seeded data, hosting on Heroku, using the Cloud9 IDE.

What's next for TimeToEat

Expanding database, optimizing time estimation calculations, mobile version
